The Danube-Bucharest Canal is a 73 kilometre-long canal
project designed to link Bucharest, Romania to the Danube
via the Arges River.
Plans were made in 1982 to connect Bucharest to the Danube
at Oltenita to enable a link with the Danube-Rhine-Main
navigable waterway.
The construction of the canal began in 1986, the project
has five locks and four hydroelectric plants.
The final project will generate 62 GWh/year.
In February 1990, the construction of the canal was stopped,
although it was 60% complete at this time.
Currently, the dam at Mihailesti and the hydro plant are
operational.
In 1997, Traian Basescu, who was Minister of Transport
at the time, announced that the budget to complete the coinstruction
of the canal would require about 400 million dollars and
take four years.
In 2005, Adriean Videanu, the current mayor of Bucharest
announced the project was included in the City's budgets.
